The Castle of Mey is a 16th-century tower house west of John o'Groats, restored in the 1950s by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother after years of neglect. The result is less grand state palace than lived-in northern retreat, with gardens and views across the Pentland Firth.
Check opening dates before going, as the season is limited and royal visits can close the house.
