MacLellan's Castle is a roofless 16th-century townhouse-castle just off the centre of Kirkcudbright. It was built for Sir Thomas MacLellan, whose family wanted something more comfortable and fashionable than an older defensive tower, but still solid enough to announce status.
The ruin is compact, with enough surviving walls, fireplaces, and window openings to make the domestic layout easy to read. Even when the interior is closed, the exterior gives a good sense of the town's older power and money.
