Fort Charlotte is a five-sided artillery fort above Lerwick harbour. The first fort was built in the seventeenth century during wars with the Dutch; the present version dates mainly from the late eighteenth century.
Modern Lerwick has grown around it, so it no longer dominates the waterfront as it once did. That makes it more interesting in a way: you can see how the old defensive town was swallowed by the later port.
