Shetland Museum and Archives is the best first stop in Lerwick. It covers the islands' geology, archaeology, fishing, textiles, boats, language, and long tug-of-war between Scottish and Norse worlds.
The building sits at Hay's Dock, which helps. You step out of the displays and straight back into the working harbour landscape that shaped much of what you have just seen.
