New Lanark Mills are the heart of the World Heritage site. The restored village presents the mills, workers' homes, schoolroom, village store, machinery, and Robert Owen's house as parts of one planned industrial community.
The interest is not only in the buildings. Owen used New Lanark to test ideas about education, welfare, and work that reached well beyond this bend in the Clyde.
