The Castle of Old Wick is a rough tower stump on a thin headland, cut off by cliffs and narrow gullies. Historic Environment Scotland dates the stronghold probably to the later 14th century, though the site feels older than any tidy date.
The walk from the south side of Wick is part of the point. In clear weather the castle is a fine short coastal outing; in wind and rain it feels exactly as exposed as a Caithness ruin should.
