Abergavenny Castle began as a Norman stronghold in the late 11th century and still gives the town its best historical anchor. The surviving walls, towers, and earthworks stand above the River Usk, with enough of the site visible to make sense of why this was a strategic Marches town.
The museum occupies a 19th-century hunting lodge built inside the ruins. It is small, but useful: Roman Gobannium, medieval Abergavenny, local crafts, and market-town life are all covered without turning the visit into a long indoor commitment.
