Europe > United Kingdom > Wales > Abergavenny
Abergavenny is one of the better small-town bases in southeast Wales: a working market town with mountains pressing in on three sides. The town sits where the Usk valley opens toward the Black Mountains, close enough to the English border to feel like a Marches town, but with a very Welsh landscape rising above it.
The centre has real texture. Abergavenny Castle and Museum keeps the Norman story visible above the River Usk, St Mary's Priory Church holds one of the best church interiors in Monmouthshire, and the market hall still gives the town a practical, food-minded rhythm.
The reason to come, though, is the ring of hills. Sugar Loaf is the classic half-day walk, Blorenge gives broader views over the Usk valley, and the Skirrid stands apart like a local landmark with its own personality. Abergavenny overlaps with Wye Valley trips, but it earns its own page as the mountain-facing market town rather than the lower river-gorge experience.
