St Mary's Priory Church is the town's best indoor historic stop. It grew from a Benedictine priory founded soon after the Norman conquest, and its interior carries far more weight than the modest exterior suggests.
Look for the medieval monuments, carved tombs, and the large wooden Jesse figure, a rare survival from a once-grand church furnishing. It is close to the market and castle, so it fits easily into a slow walk through the centre.
