Bangor Museum and Art Gallery

Free local history museum covering north Wales from prehistory to the present

Address Ffordd Gwynedd, Bangor, Gwynedd LL57 1DT

Bangor Museum and Art Gallery, run by Gwynedd Council, covers the history and culture of north Wales from the Iron Age to the 20th century. The collections include Roman finds from the regional area, examples of traditional Welsh craft (including an outstanding collection of Welsh lovespoons), furniture, ceramics, and rotating art exhibitions.

The museum is housed in a Victorian building on Ffordd Gwynedd, a short walk from the cathedral. Admission is free. It is not large, but it is well curated and gives useful context for exploring the wider region — particularly for understanding the slate industry that shaped much of north Wales in the 19th century.

A story
Among the museum's most unusual exhibits is a series of Welsh lovespoons — intricately carved wooden spoons given as tokens of affection from the 17th century onward. The tradition of carving lovespoons is uniquely Welsh; the most elaborate examples, with interconnected loops and chains carved from a single piece of wood, were intended to demonstrate the carver's skill and devotion.
