Penrhyn Castle

Grandiose Victorian mock-Norman castle with stunning grounds

Address Llandygai, Bangor, Gwynedd LL57 4HN

A vast 19th-century mock-Norman mansion just east of the city, built by the Pennant family on the profits of Jamaican sugar and Welsh slate. Every arch and pillar is a meticulous imitation of Norman stonework, but the overall effect is pure Victorian excess. The kitchen quarters and courtyard exhibitions are excellent, and the grounds — particularly the walled garden and the bog garden — are worth a long wander. Managed by the National Trust.
