Y Gaer is the remains of a Roman fort west of Brecon. There is not much vertical drama left, but the site is a useful reminder that the Usk Valley was part of a much older military landscape before the medieval town took shape.
It suits travellers who like archaeological sites and empty places more than polished attractions. Combine it with Brecon's museum if you want the Roman story to make more sense.
