Brecon

Usk Valley market town and classic base for Bannau Brycheiniog walks.

Europe > United Kingdom > Wales > Brecon

Brecon is a market town on the River Usk, best known as one of the classic bases for Bannau Brycheiniog, the Brecon Beacons National Park. The mountains are the big reason people come, but the town itself has enough stone lanes, church history, and riverside walking to reward time before or after a hike.

The centre is strongest around Brecon Cathedral, where the old close still carries traces of a fortified medieval priory. Christ College adds Tudor history, while Y Gaer and the town museum point back to Roman and local Welsh stories.

Brecon works best as a practical, attractive base rather than a grand city break. Come for a spare day if you want a town wander, a river walk, and a clear line toward the hills.
