Carmarthen Bridge — known locally as the Towy Bridge — is the lowest crossing of the River Tywi above the tidal estuary, and the only bridge in the town centre. The present seven-arch structure was completed in 1788 by William Edwards and his son, and was widened on the upstream side in 1937. There has been a bridge here since at least the early 13th century, when it was an important link on the western coast road into Pembrokeshire.
The bridge is best appreciated from the riverside path on the south bank, which gives a clear view of the arches and the medieval Carmarthen Castle above. A short walk along the path leads to the new pedestrian Millennium Bridge a few hundred metres downstream.
