Caldey Island

Small monastic island a short boat ride from the harbour

A short boat trip from Tenby harbour brings you to Caldey Island, home to a small working Cistercian monastery. Day visitors can wander the lanes, visit the modern abbey (its tea room and chocolate shop are part of the appeal), see the older Old Priory, and walk the cliffs around the south of the island where seals and seabirds gather.

Boats run roughly every twenty minutes from the harbour in season (April to October), weather permitting, and crossings take about twenty minutes. Bring sturdy shoes and a swimming costume if the weather is good — Priory Bay on the island's north side is a fine sheltered beach.

A story
The Cistercian monks of Caldey have lived on the island since 1929, but the religious community is much older — there has been a monastery here since the 6th century. The monks support themselves by making chocolate, shortbread, and perfumes distilled from the island's lavender and gorse, sold in their shop and on shore in Tenby.
