Pig Beach (Big Major Cay)

A short hop north of Staniel Cay sits Big Major Cay, an uninhabited island whose only residents are a colony of feral pigs that swim out to greet arriving boats and pose for the camera in the shallows. The image of a snout in clear turquoise water has done more for Exumas tourism than any number of beach photos.

The pigs are tame but they are still pigs — they bite, they shove, they will tip a kayak for a slice of apple. Do not feed them on the beach or in deep water. Most operators run quick fly-in tours that stop here for half an hour; an early or late boat avoids the day-trippers.

A story
No one quite knows how the pigs got there. The most-cited theory is that sailors dropped them off in the 1990s for a future barbecue and never came back. Today there are around twenty of them, supplementary-fed and apparently content to swim out to boats for snacks.
