Corozal Bay Waterfront

The shaded malecón along Corozal Bay, with a small park, fishermen, and one of Belize's best sunsets

The whole eastern side of Corozal opens onto the calm shallows of Corozal Bay, with a low seawall and a tree-lined waterfront that doubles as the town's open-air living room. There is no proper beach — the bottom is silty and tangled with sea grass, and the water is more for looking at than swimming in — but the breeze, the views across to Cerros, and the steady traffic of fishing skiffs are exactly the point.

The main waterfront park, Miguel Hidalgo Park, runs along the central blocks and is the place to watch the sun set over the bay; the orange light on the water, with the lights of Chetumal beginning to glimmer on the far shore, is among the better daily displays in northern Belize.

Pop-up barbecues and a few food shacks set up along the waterfront in the afternoons — grilled fish, conch fritters, and cold Belikin. On Sundays the park fills with families and football.
