Hopkins village beach runs the length of the village — a long, gently curved stretch of brown sand edged by palms. It's not the white-sand Caribbean postcard picture, but the water is warm, calm, and clear enough to see your feet in the shallows. Local fishing boats are pulled up on the sand, nets spread to dry. Nobody is selling anything. It's a working beach and a village beach, and that's what makes it worth an afternoon.
The water is sheltered and shallow for a good distance out, which makes it one of the better swimming beaches on this stretch of coast. Several guesthouses along the front lend kayaks; paddling north along the shoreline toward the mangroves at dusk is worth doing. At low tide the beach widens considerably and becomes a fine place to walk without shoes.
