Hopkins is a slow place — and that's the point. The main activities are beach, water, and immersing yourself in Garifuna culture.
Snorkeling and diving The South Water Caye Marine Reserve and Glover's Reef Atoll are both accessible on day trips from Hopkins. Glover's is one of the finest reef systems in the Caribbean — a full atoll with outstanding wall diving and snorkeling. Several operators in the village can arrange trips.
Kayaking Calm, sheltered water along the village shoreline makes for easy paddling. Some guesthouses lend or rent kayaks.
Garifuna drumming Drumming is part of daily life in Hopkins, not a tourist attraction. Dügü and punta rhythms are practiced and performed regularly. If you spend a few days here you'll hear it; ask locals if you want to know when something is happening.
Fishing Local fishermen take visitors out on the reef and into the mangrove lagoons. Ask at the beach rather than booking through a hotel — you'll get a better price and a more genuine experience.
Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary About 30 km inland, Cockscomb is the world's first jaguar preserve and has good hiking trails through lowland rainforest. A day trip from Hopkins works well.
Sittee River A short ride south, the Sittee River is worth exploring by canoe — quiet water, birds, and mangroves.
