The Green Iguana Conservation Project, on the grounds of the San Ignacio Resort Hotel, is a small in-town stop that doubles as a serious conservation programme. Volunteers raise green iguana hatchlings to release into the wild — the species was nearly wiped out in Belize by hunting for meat — and the tour is a fifteen-minute guided look at iguanas of all ages.
It is a particularly easy detour for travellers who arrive in the afternoon and want to do something before dinner without leaving town. Tours run roughly hourly through the day; admission is around US$10 and the proceeds fund the release programme. Allow thirty minutes.
