The Hawkesworth Bridge spans the Macal River between San Ignacio and Santa Elena and is the town's signature piece of infrastructure. Built in 1949 with components from England's Round Oak Steelworks, it is a slim suspension bridge a single lane wide, with creaking timber decking and a posted weight limit that excludes most modern trucks.
It is best appreciated on foot: there's a separate pedestrian walkway, and the view down to the slow brown river and the tangle of vegetation on the banks is the closest the town centre comes to a postcard. Traffic alternates one-way at peak times via a counterpart low-water crossing downstream.
