San Ignacio Saturday Market

The Saturday market sets up on the lot behind the town square and is the cultural event of the week in western Belize. Mennonite farmers from Spanish Lookout drive in with eggs and cheese, Maya vendors come down from the Cayo villages with herbs and palm-leaf brooms, and creole stallholders sell stew chicken and rice-and-beans plates that count as one of the best cheap lunches in the country.

It starts properly around 7am and starts winding down by early afternoon. Go hungry; bring small Belize-dollar bills; and don't skip the fresh tortillas made on outdoor griddles or the cashews-still-in-the-shell that the Mountain Pine Ridge growers bring in season. A smaller market runs on Wednesday morning.
