Loblolly Bay

Anegada's most beautiful beach, with a reef just offshore for snorkelling

Loblolly Bay is the finest stretch of beach on Anegada's north shore — a long crescent of white sand with a small reef close to shore that makes it the best snorkelling spot on the island. The water is turquoise and shallow, the sand powdery, and on most days the only sounds are waves and wind.

A beach bar and restaurant operates at the western end, serving cold drinks and fresh seafood. The lobster here is caught locally and is the thing to order — but as with all Anegada lobster restaurants, you need to tell them by midday so they can arrange the catch. Beach chairs and snorkelling gear can usually be hired from the bar.

A story
The shallow reef at Loblolly Bay is so close to the beach that you can wade out and be among coral and fish within minutes. The water is warm, clear, and barely waist-deep for a hundred metres — then the reef drops away. The wrecks that dot Horseshoe Reef beyond are mostly too deep for casual snorkellers, but the inshore reef at Loblolly is accessible to anyone comfortable in the water.
