Cowichan Valley Wineries

The Cowichan Valley has developed into Vancouver Island's most productive wine region over the past two decades, with a growing cluster of small vineyards and cideries along the back roads south and east of Duncan. The valley's mild maritime climate — Canada's warmest growing season — allows varieties including Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Ortega, and Marechal Foch to thrive in a way not possible elsewhere in the province.

Half a dozen wineries operate within easy driving distance of Duncan, several with tasting rooms open to visitors. Averill Creek, Blue Grouse Estate, and Unsworth Vineyards are among the better-known producers. Most are small family operations; the tasting room experience is nothing like the Okanagan — you may well be talking to the winemaker. The valley also has a number of craft cideries using Cowichan Valley apples. A weekend afternoon driving the winery circuit makes for a genuinely pleasant day, especially in summer when the valley is at its best.
