Hot Springs Cove

A natural geothermal spring on a remote stretch of Vancouver Island coastline, accessible from Tofino only by floatplane (25 minutes) or water taxi (about 90 minutes) through the islands and inlets of Clayoquot Sound. The journey is part of the experience — the Sound is strikingly beautiful, with forested islands, seabird colonies, and frequent marine mammal sightings.

At the springs themselves, a short boardwalk trail through old-growth temperate rainforest leads to tidal rock pools where hot water flows down from the hillside and mixes with the sea. The optimal experience is at lower tide when the pools reach a comfortable 35–40°C. Most day trips from Tofino leave early morning, spend two to three hours at the springs, and return by early afternoon. Several water taxi operators run the route; floatplane is faster but considerably more expensive.

A story
Hot Springs Cove is British Columbia's only natural hot springs accessible from the coast, and its remoteness is part of the appeal. Geothermal water emerges at 50°C from cracks in the rock, flows down a short cascade, and cools through a series of tidal pools to a temperature you can actually sit in. The pools are tidal — at high tide they're swamped by the ocean. Getting the timing right is part of the experience.
