The Audain Art Museum houses Michael Audain's private collection of British Columbia art, spanning from the work of the Haida and other Northwest Coast First Nations right through to 20th-century BC painters such as Emily Carr and E.J. Hughes, and on to contemporary artists. The collection is serious and well-curated — this is not a provincial vanity project but a genuine art museum that happens to be in a ski town.
The building opened in 2016 and was designed to complement rather than compete with the landscape. The permanent collection alone is worth the entry price; the rotating special exhibitions have brought international-quality shows to Whistler. Open year-round, the museum is a good option for days when the weather closes in or when you simply need a break from the mountain.
