Thompson is built around its mining operations and is spread out; everything is car-friendly and not very walkable except the downtown core and the Spirit Way wolf-mural trail. A handful of taxi companies operate; ride-hailing apps generally do not.
A rental car from Thompson Airport gives the most flexibility, especially for trips to Paint Lake and Pisew Falls. Winter conditions need cold-weather preparation — block heaters are standard, and cars not equipped for cold can struggle at −35°C.
