Paint Lake Provincial Park

A 230-square-kilometre boreal lake about 30 km south of Thompson on Highway 6, the closest big-water provincial park to town. The park has a campground, beach, marina, and rental cabins; the boreal forest setting (jack pine, black spruce, white birch) is classic Canadian Shield.

Summer brings canoeing, kayaking, swimming, walleye and northern pike fishing. Winter brings cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing. The drive down is the quickest way out of town to landscape worth photographing.

A story
The 'paint' in the name comes from a Cree story about a long-ago canoe accident on the lake that left ochre face paint spilled into the water — a folk explanation for the iron-rich red soils that line some of the shore.
