Boyce Farmers Market

The Boyce Farmers Market, held every Saturday morning from 6am to 1pm year-round, is Fredericton's best event and one of the finest markets in the Maritime provinces. The long red-brick building on George Street fills with vendors selling local produce, cheese, baked goods, smoked fish, maple syrup, crafts, and prepared food. In summer the stalls spill out into the surrounding streets.

Saturday morning is when Fredericton goes to market, and the atmosphere reflects that — this is a genuinely local institution, not a tourist attraction. You will find some of the best bread, preserves, and maritime seafood available anywhere in New Brunswick. Arrive early for the best selection; by noon the most popular stalls have sold out. The market runs even in the depths of winter, when the building fills with the smell of coffee and fresh pastries and everyone seems determined to pretend the cold outside doesn't exist.

A story
The Boyce Market has been running on Saturday mornings since 1951, and the tradition of Fredericton residents treating Saturday morning market as a social obligation as much as a shopping trip goes back even further. Politicians, university professors, and fishermen all buy their produce from the same vendors — a rare equalizer in a small capital city.
