Norstead Viking Village and Port of Trade

A kilometre east of the UNESCO site, Norstead is a private, full-scale reconstruction of a Viking Age port of trade — the kind of settlement that might have grown up had the Norse stayed longer in Vinland. The centrepiece is a replica Viking knarr (the cargo ship that would have brought settlers across the Atlantic), which you can board and climb around. Craftspeople demonstrate rope-making, weaving, and blacksmithing in the surrounding longhouses.

Norstead is less rigorous than the Parks Canada site and more theatrical, but it fills in imaginative gaps that the archaeological mounds can't. For children especially, being able to touch the ship and talk to "Vikings" going about their daily work makes the Norse presence feel real in a way that no museum exhibit quite manages. Admission is separate from the National Historic Site; a combination ticket is usually available.
