Quidi Vidi Lake and Village

Quidi Vidi (pronounced "kiddy viddy" by locals) is a small lake and ancient fishing village on the east side of St. John's, separated from the Atlantic by a narrow gut. The village — a dozen or so coloured houses around a tiny boat-filled cove — is one of the oldest European settlements in North America, with evidence of seasonal fishing use going back to the early 1500s. The contrast between the village's miniature scale and the large lake above it is striking.

The lake is the venue for the Royal St. John's Regatta on the first Wednesday in August, the oldest continuous sporting event in North America. The brewery of the same name makes Quidi Vidi Iceberg Beer (brewed with actual iceberg water), which has become something of a Newfoundland souvenir. The walk around the lake takes about an hour and passes the village on the seaward side.
