Midnight Sun Mosque

Prefabricated mosque trucked and barged 4,000 km from Manitoba in 2010

Address 120 Kingmingya Road

The Midnight Sun Mosque — known locally as the "Little Mosque on the Tundra" — is a small green-and-white prefabricated wooden building on the north edge of town that serves Inuvik's roughly 100-strong Muslim community. It is the northernmost mosque in the Americas.

The building was constructed in Winnipeg, then trucked, barged, and re-assembled in Inuvik over the summer of 2010 — a logistical operation more interesting than the building itself, but the mosque is now a small element of the town's surprisingly varied religious geography (Catholic igloo, Anglican wooden church, mosque, Pentecostal hall). Visitors are welcome; remove shoes if you go inside.

A story
Built in Winnipeg, the mosque was trucked west to the Hay River, barged 1,800 km down the Mackenzie River, and reassembled in Inuvik in 2010 to serve a small but established Muslim community working in the oil patch and the hospital. The shipping operation made the international news.
