A car is essential for exploring Nova Scotia beyond Halifax. The province is compact enough to drive coast to coast in a few hours, but the winding coastal roads reward a slower pace. The Cabot Trail loop on Cape Breton takes a full day to drive without stops and deserves at least two.
Halifax has a reasonable transit system and is walkable enough to explore on foot. Elsewhere, public transport is limited to occasional intercity bus services.
