Bluenose II

Bluenose II is the replica of the famous racing and fishing schooner built in Lunenburg in 1963 to celebrate the original vessel's legacy. She serves as Nova Scotia's sailing ambassador and is based in Lunenburg when not on tour. The ship is approximately 48 metres long, with two tall masts and the distinctive black hull and white topsides of the original.

In summer, Bluenose II offers public sailing excursions from the Lunenburg waterfront — a chance to crew on a traditional Banks schooner, handling lines and experiencing the vessel under sail. Trips fill up quickly in July and August. Even when she's not sailing, the ship at her berth is one of the finest photographic subjects on the South Shore, particularly in early morning or evening light. Check the official Bluenose II website for the current sailing schedule, as the ship travels for much of the year.

A story
The original Bluenose won the International Fishermen's Trophy in 1921, 1922, 1923, 1931, and 1938, never losing the competition to her American rivals from Gloucester, Massachusetts. She was more than a racing yacht — she was also a working fishing vessel, and her victories were a point of intense national pride during the difficult years of the Depression.
