Summer (June to September) is the best time to visit Lunenburg, when the waterfront is active, the Fisheries Museum is open, and Bluenose II may be in port or available for sailing excursions. The Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival in early August is a well-regarded music event that draws performers from across Atlantic Canada and beyond — book accommodation well in advance if visiting then.
September is arguably the most pleasant month — the summer crowds thin out, the light is excellent, and the surrounding South Shore countryside turns in early October. The Fisheries Museum closes in mid-October, but the town remains open and quiet through winter. The heritage district is atmospheric in winter snow, though most tourist-oriented businesses operate reduced hours or close entirely from November to April.
