Midnight Sun and Northern Lights

Resolute's latitude of nearly 75 degrees north means extreme light conditions at both ends of the year. From May to August, the sun does not set — the midnight sun circles overhead throughout the night, and the light takes on an extraordinary golden quality in the early and late hours. This continuous daylight makes the brief Arctic summer unusually vibrant and disorienting to visitors not accustomed to sleeping in full sun.

From October to February, the polar night takes over — the sun stays below the horizon for weeks, and the sky is available for aurora watching throughout the long nights. The northern lights at this latitude are frequently intense, green curtains and dancing patterns visible on most clear nights. The cold is extreme in winter (temperatures regularly reaching minus 40°C), and travel here in the dark season requires proper preparation. But for aurora photography or the sheer experience of complete Arctic winter, Resolute offers conditions that few more accessible places can match.
