Polar Continental Shelf Program

The Polar Continental Shelf Program (PCSP) is a Canadian government facility in Resolute that provides logistical support for scientific research across the High Arctic. The base — a cluster of heated buildings on the edge of the hamlet — functions as the waystation for researchers heading out to the ice, the open sea, or remote islands in the Queen Elizabeth archipelago. It coordinates helicopter flights, stores equipment, and provides accommodation and warm meals to scientists during the main field season from March to September.

Visitors cannot access the base without a research affiliation, but its presence shapes the character of Resolute entirely: this is a place that exists because of science and exploration, not in spite of hardship. The base's library and records hold decades of Arctic data. Local guides in Resolute can sometimes arrange informal introductions to researchers working there.

A story
The Polar Continental Shelf Program has been the backbone of Canadian Arctic science since 1958, when it was established to map and study the continental shelf. From its Resolute base, it coordinates logistics for hundreds of researchers each year, supplying fuel, equipment, and helicopter access to sites that would otherwise be unreachable. At the height of operations in spring, the camp is a hub of activity — geologists, biologists, glaciologists, and archaeologists all pass through.
