Day Trips

The surrounding area of Wellington County has some of Ontario's most attractive small towns and countryside. Elora, 25 km northwest, is the most scenic: a 19th-century limestone village perched above a dramatic gorge cut by the Grand River. The village has good restaurants, craft galleries, and the Elora Gorge Conservation Area for swimming and camping. West Montrose, between Guelph and Waterloo, has one of Ontario's last remaining covered bridges — still used by Mennonite horse-and-buggy traffic. St. Jacobs, near Waterloo, centres on one of the largest Mennonite farmers' markets in Canada, held Thursday and Saturday mornings. Cambridge (Galt), about 20 km south, has an intact Victorian downtown along the Grand River worth a half-day.
