The Persian — a pink-iced sweet roll — is Thunder Bay's most distinctive culinary contribution, and Bennett's, on Algoma Street, is the original. The bakery has been making them since the 1940s and still uses the same recipe. The icing is somewhere between strawberry and raspberry, the dough is brioche-like, and a fresh one is genuinely worth the trip across town.
Other Thunder Bay bakeries make Persians, but Bennett's is the one to start with. Eat one on the spot, get one to take away, and form an opinion you can defend.
