Silver Islet is a tiny historic community beyond Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, built around one of Lake Superior's great mining stories. In the 19th century, rich silver ore was worked from an islet just offshore; today the remaining cottages, shoreline, and old mine lore make it a quiet but worthwhile detour from Thunder Bay.
The drive is part of the pleasure, especially if you combine it with Sleeping Giant viewpoints, shoreline walks, or a stop at the general store when it is open. There is no big museum experience here, just a remote Superior-country hamlet with a dramatic past.
