Johan-Beetz House

Red-roofed Second Empire house on a rocky promontory above the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

The Johan-Beetz House, often called Le Château, is the village's most distinctive building: a red-roofed, Second Empire-inspired house on a rocky point near the mouth of the Piashti River. It was built for Johan Beetz, a Belgian naturalist and fur farmer whose name the village now carries.

Its appeal is partly architectural, partly biographical, and partly the setting. The house looks improbable in such a remote coastal village, which is exactly why it stays in the memory.
