Baie-Johan-Beetz

Tiny Quebec North Shore village with wild river trails, Gulf views, and Johan Beetz's red-roofed house.

Baie-Johan-Beetz is a very small village on Québec's lower North Shore, where Route 138 runs beside the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Piashti River reaches the sea. It is not a place for a long checklist. Its value is the feeling of being far out on the coast, with rock, water, burned forest, cold rivers, and almost no hurry.

The village clears the travel bar because its sights are close together and genuinely North Shore in character. The Spar Mica Trail leads to old feldspar mine workings and pale rock outcrops above the Gulf. The Quetachou Falls Trail, east of the village, follows a river through recovering forest to cascades and a waterfall. Lac Salé gives the inland-water side of the place, while the red-roofed Johan-Beetz House gives it a human story.

This is best treated as a one-day stop while driving the Whale Route between Havre-Saint-Pierre and Natashquan, or as a quiet base if you like hiking, fishing, kayaking, and remote coastal settlements. Services are limited, so arrive with fuel, food, and realistic expectations.
