Manoir Papineau is the estate of Louis-Joseph Papineau, the fiery nineteenth-century politician and seigneur who helped define French Canadian politics before and after the 1837 rebellion. The house stands on wooded grounds above the Ottawa River, close enough to the village that it feels woven into Montebello rather than set apart from it.
The appeal is the mix of politics, family life, and architecture. Guided visits put the grand rooms, towers, gardens, and river view into context, and the grounds make an easy picnic stop before returning to the village.
