Montebello is a small Ottawa River village with more travel weight than its size suggests. It sits between Gatineau and Montreal, with the old Papineau estate on one side, the huge log silhouette of the Chateau Montebello on the other, and Parc Omega's wildlife drive just outside town.
The best visit starts with Manoir Papineau, where Louis-Joseph Papineau's riverfront estate gives the village its strongest historical anchor. From there, Montebello becomes more relaxed: a walk along Notre-Dame Street, chocolate in the old station, and the river close enough to keep the place from feeling like a highway stop.
The reason to give Montebello a full day is Parc Omega. It is touristy, yes, but it is also a memorable Quebec wildlife experience, especially for families or anyone who wants moose, elk, deer, wolves, and bears without committing to a backcountry trip.
