Dieu du Ciel! at 29 avenue Laurier Ouest has been one of the best brewpubs in Quebec since 1998. The beers are brewed on site and rotate constantly, though the Péché Mortel imperial stout — intensely dark, deeply coffee-inflected — has become something of a legend and is now distributed across Canada and internationally. The Aphrodite cocoa and coffee stout and the Moralité smoked porter are also worth seeking out.
The space is a classic narrow Montreal bar: wood, exposed brick, bar stools, and tables that fill quickly. Arrive before 7 PM on weekends or expect to wait. The food is simple bar fare — cheese plates, charcuterie, sandwiches — designed not to compete with the beer. There is a second, larger location in Saint-Jérôme if you are driving north toward the Laurentians, but the Plateau original is the one that matters.
