Mount Royal

Olmsted-designed park and the mountain that named Montréal.

The mountain that gives Montréal its name dominates the city's skyline and is its most beloved green space. The Parc du Mont-Royal, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted (who also designed Central Park), offers woodland trails, a duck pond at Lac aux Castors, and a summit lookout with sweeping views over downtown, the St. Lawrence and the Laurentian hills beyond. In winter you can cross-country ski or snowshoe; in summer the mountain is full of joggers, cyclists and picnickers. On Sunday afternoons in warmer months, the large clearing known as Tam-Tams hosts an informal drum circle that draws hundreds of people — a Montreal institution.
