One of the most breathtaking interiors in North America, the Notre-Dame Basilica was completed in 1829 and redecorated in the 1870s in a blaze of deep blues, purples and golds. The woodcarving, stained glass and gilded ceiling are extraordinary. The smaller Chapelle du Sacré-Coeur behind the main altar is worth seeking out. The basilica is also famous as the venue for Céline Dion's wedding. Evening light-and-music shows (AURA) run most nights if you want to experience the space differently. Admission is charged for tourists; free for worshippers at mass.
