The Booby Pond Nature Reserve is a 24-hectare hypersaline lagoon ringed by red and black mangroves on the south-west side of Little Cayman, immediately across the road from the airfield. The colony of red-footed boobies — bright white seabirds with pale blue beaks and the namesake red feet — has been continuously nesting here for centuries. A two-storey wooden viewing platform run by the National Trust gives raised views over the pond and into the mangroves; binoculars and a spotting scope are kept here for visitor use.
The best times are early morning and late afternoon when the boobies are flying in and out to fish at sea. Frigatebirds harass the boobies as they return, trying to get them to drop their catch. Access is free and the platform is open year-round; the small visitor centre alongside has displays on the reserve and is staffed during daylight hours in season.
