The hillsides around Atenas are blanketed in coffee, and several local fincas offer tours that walk you through the full cycle from flowering to harvest to processing. Café de Altura Atenas and Vista Atenas are among the operations that receive visitors; tour arrangements are often informal — ask at your hotel or guesthouse and someone will point you to the right contact.
The best time to visit is during the harvest (October to February), when you can join pickers in the field and see the wet-mill process in action. Outside harvest season the tours focus more on the plants themselves — explaining varietals, shade growing, and the altitude's effect on flavour. The views from the upper finca roads over the Central Valley are excellent.
