Atenas

Central Valley coffee town known for mild weather, expat life, and hills west of San José.

Atenas is a small town in Costa Rica's Central Valley, about 30 minutes west of San José on the main road toward the Pacific coast. Sitting at around 700 metres elevation in the coffee-growing hills, it has long claimed to have the best climate in the world — warm days, cool nights, and very little humidity. Whether or not that title is deserved, the weather is genuinely pleasant year-round and has attracted a sizable expat community.

The town itself is small and unhurried. The central park has a pretty church and a Friday farmers market where you can buy fresh fruit, cheese, and homemade bread. The surrounding hillsides are covered in coffee plantations, and several fincas offer tours where you can see the whole process from cherry to cup. Botanical Orchid Garden, just outside town, is worth a visit for its collection of native orchid species.

Atenas works well as a quiet base for exploring the Central Valley. From here you can easily reach the Poás Volcano, the craft town of Sarchí with its famous painted ox carts, or continue west to the Pacific beaches at Jacó and Manuel Antonio. The road from Atenas down to the coast passes through dramatic mountain scenery and is one of the more scenic drives in the country.

Getting There

Atenas is about 40 km west of San José, an easy drive on the Autopista del Sol (Route 27). In light traffic the journey takes around 30 to 40 minutes; in San José rush hour it can stretch to an hour. There is no train service.

By bus, TUAN runs regular departures from the Coca-Cola terminal (Terminal Coca-Cola) in San José. The journey takes around an hour and drops you at the bus stop on the central park. Buses run roughly every hour during the day. The fare is inexpensive — under 1,000 colones as of writing.

If you are arriving from Juan Santamaría International Airport, the airport is directly on the Route 27 corridor and Atenas is a straight shot west with no need to pass through San José city centre.

Things to Do

Atenas punches above its weight for a town this size. The central park and church anchor daily life; the Friday market brings the surrounding farming communities together; and the coffee hills above town reward anyone willing to get out of the car and walk a finca. The wildlife rescue centre at Zoo Ave — actually closer to La Garita than Atenas proper, but the natural day trip from here — is one of the best places in Central America to see scarlet macaws at close range.

The town is genuinely pleasant to wander. Distances are short, the pace is slow, and locals are used to visitors without being overrun by them.

When to Go

Atenas sits at around 700 metres in the Central Valley, which moderates the heat you find on the coasts and keeps humidity low compared to the lowland tropics. Days are typically warm (mid-20s Celsius), nights are cool enough for a light layer, and the weather is pleasant year-round — the town's famous claim to "best climate in the world" is hyperbole, but not by much.

Costa Rica has two seasons: the dry season (verano, roughly December to April) and the rainy season (invierno, May to November). In Atenas the rainy season brings afternoon showers most days but mornings are usually clear. The surrounding coffee hills are at their most vivid green from June to September. The dry season is peak tourist time — more visitors, busier roads, and the landscape turns noticeably brown by March and April.

The Friday farmers market runs year-round. The coffee harvest runs from roughly October through February, which is when finca tours are most active and you can see the full process from picking through milling.
